Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa: The Latest DNV in Town

We waited. Finally, Spain’s digital nomad visa is now available. Remote workers from non-EU countries can now live and work in Spain.

Spain’s DNV will allow digital nomads to live and work remotely for up to five years. This visa aims to attract entrepreneurs and enhance the nation’s tech sector.

Over the past few years, many European countries have offered digital nomad visas following the rise in remote work. The parliament approved the digital nomad visa in Spain in November 2022 as part of the Startup Act.

This DNV will make life easier for digital nomads who want to temporarily travel and work remotely in Spain.

Who can apply for Spain’s digital nomad visa?

Spain’s digital nomad visa is open to non-EU nationals who work remotely for non-Spanish companies. However, applicants can receive 20% of their income from Spanish firms.

Self-employed freelancers who have multiple clients are eligible. Remote workers who are employed by a firm outside of Spain are also eligible for this visa.

Still, all applicants must originate outside the European Economic Area (EEA). They must not be residing illegally in Spain at the time of their application and cannot have lived in Spain for five years before the application.

The Spanish digital nomad visa is for remote workers keen on exploring the country for the first time.

You must have proof of contract, employment, or freelancing with the non-Spanish firm(s). In addition, applicants must show that they’ve worked with the clients/company for at least three months before applying. The firm must have also been operational for at least a year.

Qualifications

Applicants must show they are qualified in their field – at least three years’ work experience and a university degree or professional certificate.

Level of income

To take advantage of Spain’s DNV, you must prove you earn enough money to be self-sufficient.

Your income must stand at 200 per cent of Spain’s minimum wage. That means you must earn at least €2,334 per month or €28,000 annually. You’ll prove this at the time of your application using bank statements, contracts, and invoices.

Health insurance

Another essential requirement is health insurance. You may pay for public health insurance, but the details must be precise.

Clear criminal record

Remote workers vying for digital nomad visas must have no criminal record in Spain or the country they’ve resided in for five years before the application. You’ll need proof of a two-year clear criminal record plus a sworn statement that you’ve had no criminal case in the last five years.

How long can digital nomads stay in Spain?

A Digital nomad visa in Spain is valid for 12 months or the duration of the employment period (if it’s shorter than 12 months. The good news is the DNV can be renewed for up to five years.

You can be absent from Spain for only six months each year to sustain this visa. Remote workers can also apply for a residency card to travel across the EU while living in Spain. Wouldn’t that be an adventure?
