In 2022, the Indonesian government introduced Bali’s Digital Nomad Visa, enabling remote workers to stay there for up to five years. If you’ve been dying to visit Bali, here’s an exceptional opportunity.
This digital nomad visa is unique among all the DNVs I’ve seen. As long as you work remotely for companies (outside Indonesia), you can start packing your bags for Bali right now. But before you start, let’s find out what this 5-year visa plan is about.
Who is a digital nomad?
A digital nomad is a remote worker that uses the internet and smart devices to work while traveling to different destinations. They can work at cafes, public workspaces, or from their apartment.
Most often, a digital nomad operates as a freelancer. As a digital nomad, you can also work remotely under a person’s business (provided you don’t need to come into the office). Marketplaces like Upwork and Fiverr can help you get started if you’re craving remote work opportunities.
Common jobs for digital nomads include:
- Design
- IT
- Marketing
- Virtual Assistant
- Writing & Editing
- Customer Service
- Recruiting & HR
The Bali Digital Nomad Visa
This visa allows remote workers to stay in Bali for up to five years without paying taxes to the Indonesian government. Fortunately, Indonesia wants to accommodate three million digital nomads with this visa plan.
With this 5-year digital nomad visa, the government wants to harness the local Indonesian economy by promoting tourism and attracting travelers. Last year, Bali partnered with AirBnB to attract digital nomads to the exotic island. Bali is unarguably one of the most beautiful places in the world, so why not?
What are the requirements for Bali’s digital nomad visa?
While we await the dates for visa application, you should get ready to apply soon. Here’s what you need:
- A valid passport. If your passport is invalid, ensure you renew it now so you can apply when the application window opens.
- Proof of a remote working contract provided the income comes from outside Indonesia.
What makes Bali’s digital nomad visa unique?
Compared to other countries offering digital nomad visas, Bali’s visa is the longest – for a maximum of five years! Most countries only allow you to stay for two years or even less.
Also, Bali’s weather is desirable, and the living cost is lower. Other Indonesian visa options didn’t permit a long-term stay, and you would have to apply for a temporary visa to work from Indonesia.
Currently, digital nomads in Indonesia have to pay taxes on their income after 183 days of stay. Thanks to the new Bali digital nomad visa scheme, you won’t have to pay any income taxes for five years.
So stay tuned for updates when the visa application is announced.
