Depending on your academic program, university, and need, there are lots of scholarships in New Zealand for the brightest students. Master’s scholarships are usually issued for the first year of study – although you can find scholarships for undergraduate programs too. Let’s quickly look at some of them.
Tongarewa Scholarship at Victoria University of Wellington
The Tongarewa Scholarship is a commitment by the Victoria University of Wellington to celebrate the international student community. Eligible students must be entering their first year of undergraduate studies or postgraduate degrees at the same university. They must have received an offer of admission from the Victoria University of Wellington.
The university is offering 10 scholarships of NZ$10,000 for Bachelors and up to 9 scholarships of NZ$25,000 for Masters degree. It’s a partially funded scholarship that should cater to 1-year tuition fees.

University of Otago International Master’s Research Scholarship
This scholarship is for international students enrolling in a research Master’s programme at the University of Otago. Funding is based solely on academic merit and the applicant’s potential for research. This partially-funded scholarship covers the cost of your tuition fees as an international student.
Interestingly, only 8 scholarship awards are issued each year. The scholarship value invludes NZ$17,172 stipend per annum with a tuition fee waiver for the first year of Masters study. The funding only sponsors te thesis aspect of your Master’s research (excluding student service fee and insurance).

AUT International Scholarship
Auckland University of Technology (AUT) awards this scholarship to recognize top-achieving students from the ASEAN region. It’s only available to international students from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philipines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Like many other New Zealand scholarships for international students, this AUT scholarship is for one year only. It awards NZ$5,000 paid towards the first year of study at this university.

University of Waikato Scholarship
The Vice Chancellor’s International Excellence Scholarship is open to international students newly studying at the University of Waikato. This grant intends to support talented students who are enrolling into undergraduate and postgraduate programs for the first time.
The scholarship is valued at NZ$15,000 awarded to successful applicants who demonstrate impeccable academic achievement. However, students who study online with the University are not eligible for this scholarship.

University of Canterbury New Zealand Scholarships
The University of Canterbury offers finacial aid to struggling international students. These grants are for students experiencing financial difficulty paying for food, rent, or electricity bills. You can apply for the UCSA Hardship Grant, the International Student Welfare Fund, Mickle Fund Grant, or Foodbank and FoodSupport Service.
The aid you’ll receive depends on the budget allocated for this relief plan and your current condition. These financial aids could range from NZ$800 to NZ$2,000. Youl could also receive NZ$30 food vouchers to cater for feeding.
